#44 - Hazel’s General Store

Hazel Christman's old store.png

Hazel Christman’s General Store is actually a few hundred feet beyond the border of Eldred Township, (in Polk Township), but when you needed to do shopping you did not worry about invisible township lines. The building is still there and it is interesting to look at it and try to go back in time, in your mind, and picture children pulling up on their bicycles to buy penny candies.

We will return to Eldred in just a few minutes. Make a left turn onto Carney Road.  Within a moment, you will be traveling through a golf course - several public roads, including this one, cut through the golf course.

Pay attention, on your right and you will see a huge net (22.1m) strung up to protect a private house from errant golf balls.  Soon you will see signage identifying the golf course as Hideaway Hills.  Enjoy the manicured greens and the ponds.  And please be respectful of golfers putting.  A personal note, our car was once hit by a golf ball here.

Make a left at the stop sign (22.6m) onto Hideaway Hills Road, we will now re-enter Eldred Township and the road’s name changes (unannounced) to Kuehner Drive.

You will be passing a Christmas Tree Farm (23.1m) on your right.  There are numerous Christmas tree farms in the area - they make great “neighbors” (when Christmas approaches you will hear happy families chattering or singing Christmas songs as they head out to chop down their own tree.)

Notice the farmlands surrounding you and the gorgeous view of Blue Mountain ahead of you (24m).  Continue straight at the stop sign (24.2m), once again the road name has changed without fanfare, you are now on Greenzweig Road.  Another stop sign (24.5m) and the road name changes to Silfies Road.

Enjoy the spectacular view of the rolling hills (24.9m).  You are coming to a stretch of very old forest (25.3m).  They so effectively block out the sun that even on the hottest days you will feel a chill in the air.  At the next stop sign (25.6m), stay to the left and you will be on Correll Road.

Turn to look behind you on the right and you will see the ski trails of Ski Blue Mountain (25.9m).  Continue to a spot that is safe to sit for awhile to get a feel for the land around you and maybe come to understand how it was formed.
