#35 - Community Center, Thrift Shop,

Food Pantry & Former Elementary School

best.jpg

In 1953, the Eldred Consolidated Elementary school was built and the last of the one-room schools was closed.  Grades 1 to 8 were housed in the building - 2 grades to a single room.

It had four classrooms, an all-purpose room and an office.
In 1975, construction started to add six classrooms, a kitchen and cafeteria.

In 2010, the school was closed for cost savings due to low enrollment.  The building was offered to Eldred Township.

On July 3rd, 2014, after much discussion, investigation and thought, the Board of Supervisors voted 2 to 1 to accept the offer from Pleasant Valley School District to buy the former Eldred School for a sum of $1.

There were some conditions attached.  They wanted to be sure that the building was in good working order, with no "hidden" problems to correct.

A generous, anonymous resident offered $10,000 toward the project (I think we all know who that wonderful lady was).

The building now houses a Community Center, a Thrift Shop (manned by volunteers and providing revenue to heat the building and keep it in good repair), and a food pantry (started in November 2015) for the needy.

The building hosts a wide range of activities, such as an amateur group of musicians who meet weekly for a jam session, and a sewing circle.

A highlight each year is the annual Art Show.

Behind the building and to its right is a wonderful children's playground - appropriate for a wide range of ages.  There is also a picnic table and benches - if you have your kids with you, you may want to make an extended stop at this time before moving on.

Make a left out of the parking lot onto Kunkletown Road, continue until you see another set of public buildings, pull into the parking lot, this is the Town Hall.
